According to the Modesto Bee, the Modesto and Turlock police departments are now taking part of a statewide crackdown on cell phone usage while driving. Texting or talking while driving is illegal in California. Despite pricey tickets and the significantly increased potential for being in a car accident, California drivers continue to practice this dangerous habit.

Reports indicate that so far this month, the California Highway Patrol covering Bakersfield to Modesto has written 1,479 phone/texting tickets. In town, Modesto police have written 106 tickets and Turlock Police have cited 46 people.

MPD Traffic Sergeant Brian Findlen notes: "At this point, the problem has become more of an epidemic."

In fact, nearly 6,000 people nationwide are killed each year in accidents caused by distracted driving.

As a Modesto personal injury lawyer I am hopeful that the increased efforts to raise awareness and crackdown on distracted driving will encourage drivers to stop this dangerous practice, resulting in fewer car accidents and serious injuries.
